Best Time to Visit Rann Utsav

Every year we get the same question on WhatsApp: “Which month is best for Rann Utsav?”

And every year our answer is the same: it depends on what you want from the trip.

Some people want the whitest salt and cold, clear nights. Some want fewer people and lower prices. and Some only care about the full moon. Each month gives you a slightly different Rann. We have run our camp at Dhordo for many seasons now, so here is an honest month-by-month breakdown to help you pick.

Quick answer: For the whitest salt and best weather, go in December or January. For a quieter, cheaper trip, go in late November or February. Whatever month you pick, try to land on a full moon date.

If you are still new to the festival, start with our complete Rann Utsav 2026-27 guide and then come back here.

Rann Utsav 2026-27 Dates

The official Rann Utsav season for 2026-27 runs from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027 at Dhordo, in the Kutch district of Gujarat. Our own camp at Dhordo runs from November to February.

One thing most people don’t know: the White Rann is not white all year. During the monsoon, the Rann fills with shallow seawater. After the rains stop, the water slowly dries up and leaves a layer of salt behind. That is why the salt looks different in each month. It also changes a little from year to year, depending on how heavy the monsoon was.

The official full moon windows this season are:

  • 22 to 25 November 2026
  • 21 to 24 December 2026
  • 20 to 23 January 2027
  • 18 to 21 February 2027

These dates can move slightly, so always confirm before you book. We explain why these nights matter in our post on the best full moon nights at Rann of Kutch.

Rann Utsav Month by Month

Rann Utsav in November: Good for Early Birds

November is when the festival opens. The tent city is fresh, the staff are full of energy, and the crowds are still building up.

The days are warm, around 30 to 32°C, so carry a cap and sunscreen. Nights are pleasant and only a little cool.

The catch is the salt. In early November, some parts of the Rann can still be wet or a little grey from the monsoon. By the second half of the month it usually gets much better. Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, so the first two weeks also bring a holiday rush.

Best for: People who want to avoid the December crowd, families on Diwali break, and anyone who doesn’t mind a less perfect white.

December is when most people picture the Rann at its best. The salt is usually bright white by now, the sky is clear, and the weather is just right in the day.

Nights get properly cold, often 8 to 12°C, and it feels colder out on the open salt. Read our packing list for Rann Utsav before you go.

The second half of December is the busiest time of the whole season. The full moon this year lands right before Christmas, so the 21 to 31 December window will fill up very fast. If these are your dates, see our guide to Rann Utsav for Christmas and New Year and book early.

Best for: First-timers, photographers, and anyone who wants the classic Rann experience.

Rann Utsav in January: Coldest and Clearest

January is our personal favourite. The salt is still white, the post-New Year rush is gone, and the air is very clear. Sunrise and sunset over the Rann look sharp and colourful.

This is the coldest month. Nights can drop close to 5°C on the salt flats, so pack a warm jacket, cap and socks. Our tents have proper bedding and hot water, which makes a big difference here.

Watch out for two busy dates: Uttarayan (kite festival) on 14 January and the Republic Day long weekend around 26 January.

Best for: Couples, slow travellers, and people who want good weather without peak crowds.

Rann Utsav in February: Quieter and Easier on the Pocket

By February, the crowd thins out. You get more space on the White Rann, shorter queues and more relaxed staff at the craft villages.

Days start getting warmer again, around 28 to 30°C, and nights are comfortable. The salt is mostly still white, though towards the end of the month it can start to look a bit dull in some patches.

February is also a good time to add a day trip to the handicraft villages of Kutch, since the artisans are less rushed.

Best for: Budget travellers, senior citizens who don’t like the cold, and people with flexible dates.

What About Early March?

The official season runs till 7 March, but by then it gets hot in the day and the festival is winding down. We suggest finishing your trip by February if you can.

Quick Comparison: Which Month Should You Pick?

Month Day temp (approx.) Night temp (approx.) Salt Crowd Full moon window
November 30–32°C 15–18°C Good, better in second half Medium (high in Diwali week) 22–25 Nov
December 25–28°C 8–12°C Very white Very high 21–24 Dec
January 24–27°C 5–10°C Very white High 20–23 Jan
February 28–30°C 12–14°C White, fading late in month Low to medium 18–21 Feb

Temperatures are rough averages. Out on the open salt at night, it always feels a few degrees colder.

Full Moon or Dark Moon: Which Is Better?

The month matters, but the moon matters even more.

On a full moon night, the whole White Rann glows silver. You can see far across the salt without any torch. This is the view most people come for, and it is why full moon dates sell out first and cost a little more.

On a dark moon night, there is no moonlight at all. The Rann goes pitch black and the sky fills with stars. If you like stargazing or night photography, this can be even more special. And it is usually easier to get tents on these dates.

Our simple advice:

  • First trip? Go on a full moon.
  • Love stars or photography? Try a dark moon night.
  • Can’t get full moon dates? Go two or three days before or after. The moon is still bright enough to light up the salt.

Which Month Is Right for You?

  • Honeymoon or couple trip: January, on the full moon.
  • Family with kids: Late November or December school holidays. Pack warm clothes for the kids.
  • Elderly parents: November or February, when nights are not too cold.
  • On a budget: February, or any non-full-moon weekday.
  • Photographers: December or January for white salt and clear skies.
  • Short trip from Ahmedabad: Any month works. Our Rann Utsav package from Ahmedabad covers transfers so you don’t have to plan the drive.
