Rann Utsav with Family: A Stress-Free Guide for Trips with Kids and Elderly Parents

“Will my parents manage the walking?” “Will it be too cold for the kids?” “Is there a doctor nearby?”

These are the questions families ask us most before booking Rann Utsav. They are fair questions. The White Rann is a huge open salt desert, the nights get cold, and the nearest big town is more than an hour away.

The good news is that Rann Utsav is one of the easiest festival trips in India for families, as long as you plan a few things right. One of our guests came with elderly parents and was worried about the walking. We arranged a cart right up to the salt flats, and a team member stayed with them all evening. That is the kind of planning this guide is about.

Quick answer: Yes, Rann Utsav is great for families. Pick a month that isn’t too cold, stay 2 nights instead of 1, use the carts on the White Rann, and pack warm layers for everyone.

Best Time for a Family Trip to Rann Utsav

The Rann Utsav 2026-27 season runs from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027. Not every month suits every family.

  • With elderly parents: Go in November or February. Nights are cool but not freezing, so older people sleep better and feel more comfortable outside in the evening.
  • With small kids: Late November or the December school holidays work well. Kids handle the cold better than adults expect, but pack them proper warm clothes.
  • Avoid if possible: January nights can drop close to 5°C out on the salt. That can be hard on grandparents and toddlers.

Full moon nights are beautiful, but they are also the busiest. With older family members, a date two or three days before or after the full moon gives you the moonlight with less crowd and less queueing.

Getting There Without Tiring Everyone Out

Bhuj is the closest city to Dhordo, about 85 km away. With family, flying or taking the train to Bhuj and then a car to Dhordo is the easiest way. Driving all the way from Ahmedabad takes most of a day, which is a lot for grandparents and small children.

Our Rann Utsav package from Bhuj includes an AC transfer, so someone is waiting for you when you land. For other routes, see how to reach Rann of Kutch.

A small tip: book a train or flight that reaches Bhuj by late morning. That way you reach the camp by lunch, rest in the afternoon, and still catch sunset on the White Rann.

Choosing the Right Tent for Your Family

This is where families should not cut corners. Look for:

  • An attached bathroom with hot water. Nobody wants a cold walk to a shared toilet at night, least of all a 70-year-old.
  • Proper beds, not mattresses on the floor. Getting up from a low bed is hard for older knees.
  • A tent close to the dining area. Ask for this when you book.
  • An extra bed for kids. Ask whether one is possible in your tent category.

All our tents at Dhordo, both Deluxe AC and Premium AC, have attached bathrooms, hot water and wooden flooring. To compare all the stay types, read accommodation options at Rann Utsav.

How Much Walking Is There on the White Rann?

This is the most important question for families with elderly members.

You drive most of the way from the camp to the White Rann. But from the parking area to the open salt, there is still a walk, and then you walk on the salt itself. The ground is flat but uneven in places, and it can feel long for someone who tires easily.

Here is what helps:

  • Use a camel cart or a battery cart. These run between the parking area and the salt. Tell your operator in advance if someone in your group needs one.
  • Go a little before sunset. It is less crowded, and older people can settle in before the rush.
  • Carry a folding stool if a parent needs to sit often. There is not much seating out on the salt.
  • Keep kids close after dark. The White Rann is huge and every direction looks the same at night.

Health and Safety Tips

Medicines: Bring every regular medicine for the full trip, plus a few extra days’ worth. There are no big chemists near Dhordo. Carry the prescriptions too.

Doctors: The tent city has basic first aid. For anything serious, the nearest proper hospitals are in Bhuj, about 1.5 to 2 hours away. If a parent has a heart, BP or breathing condition, talk to their doctor before the trip.

Cold nights: The days are sunny, but it gets cold fast after sunset. Grandparents and toddlers feel it first. Dress them in layers: a thermal, a sweater, a jacket, a cap and socks.

Sun and dryness: The white salt reflects a lot of sunlight. Sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm and a cap are a must, even for kids.

Water: The air is very dry. Keep everyone drinking water through the day, especially older people, who often forget.

ID cards: Every adult needs an ID for the White Rann permit, and it’s safest to carry one for kids too, like a school ID or Aadhaar. See Rann Utsav entry fees and tickets for the full permit details.

Food: Easy on Kids and Older Stomachs

Food at Rann Utsav is mostly vegetarian Gujarati and Kutchi cooking: dal, kadhi, khichdi, rotla, sabzi and sweets. It is home-style and gentle on the stomach, so most families do fine.

If a parent needs less oil, less spice or sugar-free food, tell the camp when you book, not when you arrive. For fussy kids, carry a few packets of biscuits or their favourite snack, just in case.

A Simple 2-Night Plan for Families

One night is too rushed with kids and grandparents. Two nights let everyone rest between outings. If you are unsure, read how many days you need at Rann of Kutch.

Day 1: Arrive and take it slow

  • Reach Bhuj, then take the transfer to the camp.
  • Have lunch, then rest in the tent in the afternoon.
  • Head to the White Rann about an hour before sunset.
  • Come back for dinner and the cultural programme. Kids love the folk dance and music.

Day 2: Easy outing and full moon (or star) night

  • Sleep in. Have breakfast at the camp.
  • Visit a nearby craft village like Hodka or Bhirandiyara. It’s a short drive and has little walking. Our Kutch handicraft villages guide lists the best ones.
  • Rest after lunch.
  • Go back to the White Rann in the evening for the moonlight, or skip it if the elders are tired.

Day 3: Sunrise and go home

  • Anyone who is up for it can see sunrise on the salt. The rest can sleep.
  • Have breakfast, check out and take the transfer back to Bhuj.

Activities: What to Pick and What to Skip
