Jawai, tucked in the Pali district of Rajasthan, is one of India's best-kept wildlife secrets. Surrounded by ancient granite hills, the Jawai Bandh reservoir and the free-roaming leopards of Bera, this destination offers something no other wildlife zone in India can match — a genuine coexistence of big cats, tribal communities and breathtaking landscape.
You wake up to the sound of birds over the dam, drive out at dawn to spot leopards on the hillside, and return to a spacious, elegantly designed tent or cottage where every detail has been attended to.
Unlike Ranthambore or Jim Corbett, Jawai has no fenced forest. Leopards, crocodiles and flamingos live freely alongside Rabari shepherds and their herds. The granite hillocks around Jawai Bandh serve as natural dens, making sightings more predictable and intimate than in most tiger reserves. Birdwatchers find the reservoir equally rewarding — flamingos, pelicans, painted storks and migratory waterfowl arrive in the thousands between October and March.
The best luxury resorts in Jawai combine wildlife access with genuine comfort — spacious rooms or tents with proper air conditioning, quality Rajasthani cuisine, a swimming pool or spa, and guided safaris led by trained naturalists, not tractor drivers. Every stay includes daily leopard safaris, morning birdwatching at the dam, and cultural experiences with the local Rabari community. We keep group sizes small, so expect a minimum of two safaris a day — sunrise and sunset — scheduled around you.
Our Swiss-style tents are purpose-built for this terrain — elevated platforms, king-sized beds, stone-floored bathrooms with hot showers, and large mesh windows that let the breeze in while keeping insects out. Far from city light pollution, the Milky Way is visible on clear nights from October through March. These are tents in name only: they deliver the warmth, privacy and service of a boutique hotel.
The wildlife encounters here are calm and non-threatening — leopards are spotted from a respectful distance, and crocodile sightings at the dam require no hiking. Family tents are spacious with room for a travel cot or extra beds, child-friendly menus are available, and safaris can be timed around nap schedules. Village walks, pottery sessions and watching Rabari women embroider engage children aged 6 and above. Many guests bring grandparents, who find the flat terrain around the dam accessible.
