Beyond the White Rann: 10 Best Places to Visit Near Rann Utsav (With Distances)
Most people spend their whole Rann Utsav trip at the tent city and the White Rann. That is a mistake.
Kutch is one of the most interesting parts of India. Within a few hours of Dhordo you can stand on the highest point in Kutch, walk through a 4,500-year-old Harappan city, drive on a road with water on both sides, and watch flamingos in a wetland. Most of it is easy to fit into a Rann Utsav trip if you plan a little.
Quick answer: If you have one free day, go to Kalo Dungar and the craft villages. If you have two, add Dholavira via the Road to Heaven. If you are coming through Bhuj, give the city half a day.

Close to Dhordo (Under 1.5 Hours)
1. Kalo Dungar (Black Hill)
Kalo Dungar is the highest point in Kutch, at about 462 metres. From the top, the Great Rann stretches all the way to the horizon, and on a clear evening you can hardly tell where the salt ends and the sky begins.
There is an old Dattatreya temple at the top. Locals will also tell you about the “magnetic hill” on the way up, where cars seem to roll uphill on their own. Go in the late afternoon so you catch sunset from the top.
Time needed: 2–3 hours, including the drive
2. Craft Villages: Hodka, Bhirandiyara and Ludiya
These villages are just a short drive from the tent city. Families here still live in round mud houses called bhungas. They make embroidery, leather work, mirror work and painted pottery, much like their grandparents did.
You can watch the artisans at work and buy straight from them. Our Kutch handicraft villages guide covers which village is known for what. If you have more time, Nirona (Rogan art) and Bhujodi (weaving) are on the way to Bhuj.
Time needed: Half a day
3. Chhari Dhand Wetland
Chhari Dhand is a seasonal wetland on the edge of the Banni grasslands. In winter, it fills with migratory birds: flamingos, cranes, pelicans and many more. December and January are usually the best months to see them.
Go early in the morning, carry binoculars, and keep your voice low. It’s a calm, beautiful place that few Rann Utsav visitors know about.
Time needed: Half a day
The Big Day Trip: Road to Heaven and Dholavira
If you can give one full day to a single trip, make it this one.
4. Road to Heaven
The Road to Heaven is a narrow, roughly 30 km road that runs from Khavda to Dholavira, cutting straight across the Rann. Depending on the season, you see water, salt or both on either side, stretching as far as you can see. It feels like driving on a line drawn across the earth.
Before this road was built, getting from the Bhuj side to Dholavira meant a long drive around the Rann that took most of a day. Now Dholavira is an easy day trip from Dhordo.
There are no shops or petrol pumps on the stretch, so fill up and carry water before you start. Stop only where it is safe to pull over.
5. Dholavira (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Dholavira is one of the largest cities of the Harappan civilisation, built around 4,500 years ago. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021.
What surprises most visitors is how smart the city was. There are huge stone water reservoirs, drains, a clear city plan, and one of the oldest known signboards in the world. The small site museum helps a lot, so see it first.
Carry a cap and water, because there is very little shade on the site. Hire a local guide if one is available. The ruins make much more sense when someone explains them.
6. Kutch Fossil Park
This small, privately run fossil park is about 10 km from Dholavira. It has fossils of sea creatures and ancient trees, a reminder that this desert was once under the sea. It is a nice short stop if you have kids or are curious about science.
Time needed for the whole trip: A full day, leaving the camp by 7 or 8 am
Bhuj and Beyond
7. Bhuj
Most people pass through Bhuj on their way to Dhordo, so give it half a day. Here are a few places worth seeing:
- Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal: Two old royal palaces in the heart of the city. Aina Mahal is known for its mirror work, and Prag Mahal has a tall clock tower with a city view.
- Smritivan: A memorial and museum built in honour of the people lost in the 2001 Kutch earthquake. It is moving, well designed and one of the best museums in Gujarat.
- Old markets: The best places to shop for bandhani, embroidery and Kutchi sweets.
If you’re flying or taking a train into Bhuj, our Rann Utsav package from Bhuj makes it easy to add a Bhuj stop. Hungry while you’re there? Our Kutchi food guide tells you what to eat.
8. Mandvi
Mandvi is a seaside town about an hour from Bhuj. It’s quite different from the desert. You get a calm beach, the grand Vijay Vilas Palace, and a shipyard where wooden ships are still built by hand, much as they were hundreds of years ago. Mandvi is also where Kutchi dabeli was born, so eat one here.
Time needed: A full day from Dhordo, or half a day from Bhuj
9. Lakhpat Fort
Lakhpat was once a busy port town. When the river changed course, the town slowly emptied out. Today you can walk along its long fort walls and look out over the Rann towards the sea, and visit an old gurudwara and a beautiful stone tomb. It is quiet, a little haunting, and very photogenic.
10. Narayan Sarovar and Koteshwar
Narayan Sarovar is one of the five holy lakes in Hindu tradition. A short drive away, Koteshwar Mahadev temple sits right on the edge of the land, facing the sea. Most people visit Lakhpat, Narayan Sarovar and Koteshwar together in one long day.
Time needed: A full day from Dhordo, so it is better as an extra night from Bhuj
How to Fit These Into Your Trip
If you have 1 night at the camp: Visit the White Rann at sunset and the craft villages the next morning. There isn’t time for much else.
If you have 2 nights (our top pick):
- Day 1: Arrive, rest, White Rann at sunset, cultural evening
- Day 2: Craft villages in the morning, Kalo Dungar for sunset
- Day 3: Sunrise on the salt, then a Bhuj stop on the way back
If you have 3 nights:
- Same as above, plus a full day for the Road to Heaven and Dholavira
And If you have 4–5 days in Kutch: Add a night in Bhuj and do Mandvi one day, and Lakhpat with Narayan Sarovar on another.

Tips for Day Trips from Dhordo
- Book a car with a local driver. Roads are good, but signs are few and the network is weak in places.
- Start early for long trips. Dholavira and Lakhpat are full-day outings, and it gets dark fast.
- Carry water, snacks and a cap. There are long stretches with no shops.
- Keep your ID with you. Parts of Kutch are close to the border, and you may need to show it.
- Don’t try everything in one trip. Two good day trips beat four rushed ones.
